In some cultures, it is not appropriate for a man and woman to shake hands unless they are related. So, how should a student who doesn’t shake hands greet an employer of the opposite sex?

Career services professionals offer several options:

  • Place your right hand over your heart and briefly explain your cultural view.
  • Hold both of your hands together and give a short bow.
  • Put your hand over your heart and smile while saying “such a pleasure to meet you.” No apology needed.
