Interview with Joe Mainous—Sr. Director of Global Sourcing and Supplier Development at Lowe’s Home Improvement.

By Liz Mainous—Sophomore, Pre-Business

Please give a brief summary about your job:

I lead our global sourcing in Europe, India and South America.  My team identifies potential suppliers in these regions who can offer unique, innovative or cost competitive products. In this effort we also ensure factories meet our social, ethical, quality, safety and security standards necessary to be a supplier to Lowe’s.

What’s a fun fact about your work?

In my work I have had the opportunity to live in Asia, as well as travel to numerous countries to find sources.  I have worked with people of differing cultures, and grown to appreciate both our similarities and differences in approach to business and life.

In what areas do you see Lowe’s expanding in the upcoming years?

Lowe’s is a financially strong company that is always exploring new ways to serve new customers.  We recently opened our first city-center store in New York City, and announced plans for more stores in Canada.  Of course, the Internet continues to evolve how consumers shop, and we are constantly strengthening this part of our business.

Do you have any tips for current UNC students who are interested in working for Lowe’s?

Lowe’s looks for talented individuals who thrive in an organization focused on open collaboration, servant leaderships, and who are driven by a purpose.

Do you have any tips for current UNC students who want to pursue Global Sourcing as a profession?

Be open to other cultures. Stay in tune to shifts in the global economy.  The world is constantly changing, and is getting smaller and more connected every day.
